The right music accompanies the pace of shopping and how customers feel.
A RESEARCH FINDING+11%
Weekday sales effect
In a supermarket field study by Ahlbom and colleagues, weekday sales were 11% higher with music than without it. The findings suggest that appropriate music can contribute to the shopping experience and sales.
Music tempo can influence how customers move through a store and the rhythm of shopping. Milliman’s field research links different tempos to in-store movement speed and sales volume. We therefore plan music not only by genre, but also by the character of the space, time of day and desired atmosphere.
The same study did not find the same sales increase on weekends. Music’s effect may vary with the shopping day, the customer’s state and store conditions. A schedule suited to each branch and different times of day is therefore important.
